Fushimi Inari Taisha (Fushimi Inari Shrine), known for its fantastic Senbon Torii (Thousands of torii gates) in Fushimi Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, is the head shrine of all Inari Shrines in Japan and is said to bring good fortune in terms of a huge harvest and business success. There are more than 30,000 Inari Shrines in Japan, making it the most numerous shrine in the country.

Fushimi Inari Taisha was built in 711, but most of the shrine buildings were lost in 1468 during the Onin War, and the present main shrine was rebuilt in 1499.
There are many fox statues in shrine precincts, people may think that the fox is enshrined at Fushimi Inari Taisha. In reality, the shrine enshrines Inari Okami, the god of huge harvest, and the foxes are messengers of Inari Okami.
Inari Okami is affectionately called “Oinari-san” by the people, and thus Fushimi Inari Taisha is also called “Oinari-san”.

Behind the main shrine is Mt. Inari (223 meters above sea level). It takes more than two hours to walk around the mountain, but if you have time to spare, it is recommended to walk around the mountain to see the view of the city of Kyoto at the viewing spots, and the more mysterious places along the way.
