Okunitama Shrine is located in Fuchu City, Tokyo, and is one of the five prestigious shrines in Tokyo with a history of over 1,900 years. The other five shrines in Tokyo include Meiji Shrine, Yasukuni Shrine, Hie Shrine, and Tokyo Daijingu Shrine.
Despite its location in the center of Fuchu City, the shrine grounds, rich in nature, have a mysterious and solemn atmosphere.
When the 2020 Tokyo Olympics were held, a portion of the precincts of Okunitama Shrine was used as the course for a road race.
About Okunitama Shrine
Fuchu City, where Okunitama Shrine is located, was once the political center of “Musashi-no-kuni”, one of the local administrative divisions (present-day Tokyo, Saitama, and part of Kanagawa Prefecture). Okunitama Shrine enshrines “Okunitama-no-Ookami,” the guardian deity of Musashi Province.

Kurayami Matsuri (Darkness Festival)
The “Kurayami Matsuri (Darkness Festival)” held from April 30 to May 6, is especially famous as an event of the Okunitama Shrine.
The main event, “Mikoshi Togyo (Vehicle of the divine spirit called a Mikoshi, which is carried by a person)” , is held on May 5 from 6:00 p.m., and many people visit the shrine to watch the powerful procession.
Also, from the evening of May 3 to May 5, many food stalls called “Yatai” will be set up in the precincts of Okunitama Shrine.
