Sensoji Temple is the oldest temple in Tokyo with a history of nearly 1,400 years, and its official name is “Kinryuzan Sensoji Temple”.
Sensoji Temple and the famous Kaminarimon Gate, with its huge red lantern and gate, which symbolize Asakusa, are the main gates of Sensoji Temple.
The main hall, the five-storied pagoda, the Nakamise Shopping Street, and the Kaminarimon are all part of the Sensoji temple grounds, and visitors can feel the Japaneseness.

Kaminarimon Gate
The official name of the Kaminarimon Gate is “Furaijinmon Gate” so named because the gods Wind and Thunder are enshrined on either side of the gate.
The lanterns on the Kaminarimon are 3.9 meters(12.8 feet) high and 3.3 meters(11 feet) wide, and weigh approximately 700 kilograms.
Since its construction, Kaminarimon has been repeatedly burned down and rebuilt, and the current gate was rebuilt in 1960.
Nakamise Shopping Street
Nakamise, located beyond the Kaminarimon, is the main approach to Sensoji Temple. And is said to be one of the oldest shopping streets in Japan, dating back to the Edo period.
The 250-meter-long approach to the temple is lined with about 90 souvenir stores and stores where visitors can enjoy Japanese sweets.
